Lieutenant Colonel Gordon, aged 29 in 1815 and aide de camp to Wellington, was wounded near the Lion’s Mound when a cannonball shattered his leg. His leg was amputated at Wellington’s headquarters, but he later died.
Before his death, he said: «God be praised, you are safe!».
The Gordon Monument pays tribute to his service, his sacrifice, and his role close to command in that decisive day.
