The Gordon Monument

  • Lieutenant-Colonel and aide-de-camp to the Duke of Wellington, Gordon was 29 years old in 1815. During the Battle of Waterloo, he was near the Lion’s Mound when a cannonball tore off his leg. Taken to Wellington’s headquarters, his leg was amputated, but he died after the operation.

Before he died, he showed his esteem for the Duke one last time by saying to him: «  God be praised, you are safe! ».

The monument pays tribute to his role close to the command and his sacrifice during this decisive battle.
