One of the must-see attractions…
The location of this Dutch memorial commemorates the injury sustained here by the Prince of Orange of the Netherlands.
Erected in 1823, it took three years to complete the construction of this monument, located on a mound 40.5 m high and 520 m in circumference. To form the mound, 300,000 m² of earth were removed from the battlefield. The cast-iron lion, the work of Van Geel, was cast at the Cockerill factories, is 4.45 m high and weighs 28 tons. It symbolizes the victory of the Allied armies over France: one of its paws rests on the globe, symbolizing peace at last, as the Battle of Waterloo put a definitive end to the years of war…
