Located in the heart of Genappe, the former inn of the king of spain is a precious witness to the last days of Napoleon’s epic. This historic inn was visited by the future Louis XVIII in 1792 before welcoming the Duke of Wellington and Prince Jérôme Bonaparte during the 1815 campaign.
On 20 June 1815, two days after the Battle of Waterloo, French General Duhesme died here from his wounds. It was also here that Marshal Blücher collected Napoleon’s personal effects – his sword, telescope, decorations and famous hat – before setting off in triumph in the imperial sedan.
A place steeped in history, the inn of the king of spain is a reminder that Genappe was a key point in the retreat of Napoleon’s army and the triumph of the Allies.
