    The Memorial 1815

Buried at the foot of the Lion’s Mound, the Memorial Museum lets you relive one of the most tumultuous periods in our history, as if you were there.

This museum offers a unique multi-sensory experience for all ages:

    • Feast your eyes on the historical costume gallery.
    • Feel the thrill of battle, galloping with the horses, as you watch the 4D movie.
    • Let your fingers scroll across the museum’s touch screens.
    • A smartphone app guides you through the museum.

Languages available: French, Dutch, English, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Chinese and Japanese.

Please remember to bring a charged smartphone and headphones to enjoy the tour app.

  • The Lion’s Mound

The Lion’s Mound offers a unique view of the battlefield after a memorable ascent of 226 steps. This 40-metre-high tumulus was erected in 1826 on the spot where the Prince of Orange was wounded before becoming King of the Netherlands. At its summit, the lion reigns over the plain, symbolizing the victory of the monarchies.

    The Panorama

Discover this immense fresco, 110m in circumference and 12m high, created in 1912 by Frenchman Louis Dumoulin to celebrate the centenary of the battle. The Panorama illustrates a key moment in the battle as it rages. Plunge into the heart of the Battle of Waterloo thanks to an impressive sound system.

  • The Hougoumont Farm

Generally described as the last authentic witness to the Battle of Waterloo, The Hougoumont Farm is without doubt the most emblematic and best-preserved monument in terms of its appearance in the aftermath of the battle. Occupied by the British, it was the scene of fierce fighting throughout the day of June 18, 1815. The Duke of Wellington used to say that the battle was only won by closing the gates at Hougoumont: «The success of the battle turned upon the closing of the gates at Hougoumont ».

At the farm: an incredible sound and light show and a new museum area.

For a refreshing break or a light snack, a tea room is available at the Farm.

  • The Accommodation

Staying at the Hougoumont Farm is a unique experience, immersing you right in the heart of the Waterloo battlefield.

In this place steeped in history, two distinct experiences await:

    • The guesthouse, located in the former farmhouse, combines old-world charm with modern comfort. The authenticity of the old stone walls and the tranquility of the surrounding countryside create a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere.
    • For a more unusual experience, the farmyard hosts original bivouacs. Spend the night under a tent in this historic setting, right in the midst of history.

Whether you choose the comfort of the guesthouse or the adventure of the bivouacs, your stay at the Hougoumont Farm will remain a unique memory, blending history, authenticity, and a sense of escape.

Information and reservations are available here.

  • From April to the end of October, the estate offers guided tours during the week (Monday to Friday). On weekends, public holidays and during school holidays, special activities are organised for visitors.
