Located on the southern edge of the Waterloo battlefield, La Belle Alliance Farm owes its name to a local story: the unexpected marriage between the owner at the time and her valet, whom the locals nicknamed « la belle alliance » (the beautiful alliance). But above all, this farm has become a major historical symbol, as it was here that, on the evening of 18 June 1815, the Duke of Wellington and Marshal Blücher met after their decisive victory over Napoleon.
This handshake sealed the coalition that put an end to Napoleon’s epic and changed the fate of Europe. Today, the Ferme de la Belle Alliance is a reminder of this double alliance, both intimate and strategic, and is one of the emblematic places to visit if you want to understand the full significance of the Battle of Waterloo.
