On June 18, 1815, during the Battle of Waterloo, Papelotte Farm was one of three strongpoints, along with the Castle-Farm of Hougoumont and the Haie Sainte-Farm, covering the left flank of Wellington’s troops.
Defended by two regiments of Nassauvians (German soldiers from the Duchy of Nassau, integrated into the Dutch army), it was briefly occupied by the French troops of the Durutte Division.
The farmhouse was partially burnt down during the battle, and was not rebuilt until 1857-1858, when the octagonal tower over the porch was erected.
Defended by Orange-Nassau detachments, it covered the entry of von Zieten’s Prussian army onto the Waterloo battlefield in the early evening, decisive for Napoleon’s defeat.
