Situated at Hougoumont Farm, this striking bronze sculpture depicts two British soldiers desperately closing the large north gate as French troops press in. On 18 June 1815, French troops launched a massive attack on the farmhouse : one of the battle’s pivotal moments. In a chaos of fire and shouting, the Coldstream Guards, along with other British units, managed to close the gate just in time, preventing the French soldiers from entering the enclosure.
Wellington later remarked that «victory depended on the closing of that gate».
Unveiled in 2015 during the bicentenary, this monument stands on the spot where those soldiers acted. It honours not just the two figures, but all British troops who fought on that day.
Located on the very spot where it all happened, it invites visitors to relive this key moment as close to history as possible.
