The Church of Plancenoit
-
Nestled in the village of Plancenoit, this church was one of the strategic points during the Battle of Waterloo.
On the afternoon of 18 June 1815, the church and its surroundings were the scene of fierce fighting between General von Bülow’s Prussian troops and the French forces commanded by Napoleon. The street fighting was particularly violent: soldiers fought their way into the cemetery adjacent to the church, causing heavy losses on both sides.
Severely damaged, the building was rebuilt in the 19th century, but remains associated with this decisive episode that contributed to the collapse of the French lines.
Today, it stands as a symbol of resistance and remembrance for the village.
