La Belle Alliance Farm

  • On the southern edge of the Waterloo battlefield, this farm takes its name from a local anecdote: the marriage between its owner and her valet, hence «the beautiful alliance.» More importantly, it is where, on the evening of 18 June 1815, the Duke of Wellington and Marshal Blücher met after their victory over Napoleon.

That handshake became a powerful emblem of coalition and the end of the Napoleonic epic. Today the farm stands as a symbol of that strategic and intimate alliance, and it helps one understand the full significance of Waterloo.
