Mont-Saint-Jean Farm 1815

The English Hospital (open to visitors)

  • Originally established by the Order of St. John (also known in legend as the «Order of the Templars», later the Order of Malta), Mont Saint Jean served as a military hospital for Allied (English) troops during the Battle of Waterloo. Since 18 June 2015, the site has been home to a museum called The Price of Bravery, dedicated to the care given to the wounded on that day.

In the aftermath of the battle, for nearly four days, local doctors and surgeons treated around 6,000 Allied soldiers. They performed mass amputations without anesthesia or sterile conditions. Limbs, according to some accounts, were «piled up in the four corners of the farmyard.»

The building you see today dates from 1778.
