The Mont-Saint-Jean Farm 1815

The English Hospital (can be visited)

  • Created by the Order of the Hospitallers of Saint-Jean ( « the Order of the Templars » which later became the  « Order of Malta »), the Mont-Saint-Jean farm served as a military hospital for English troops during the Battle of Waterloo. Since June 18, 2015, it has housed a new museum, the « The Price of Bravery», dedicated to the care given to the wounded during the battle of June 18, 1815.

After the battle, working tirelessly for almost four days, local doctors and surgeons operated on 6,000 allied soldiers and performed amputations in series, without anesthesia or aseptic precautions. The amputated limbs  «  piled up in the four corners of the farmyard ».

The building as it stands today dates back to 1778.
