The Monument to the French Soldiers Who Died at Hougoumont

  • This monument pays tribute to the French soldiers who fell during the attack on Hougoumont Farm, one of the most bitter episodes of the Battle of Waterloo. Located not far from the Hougoumont Chapel, it is a reminder of the heavy price paid by Napoleon’s troops as they stormed this strategic position, which was solidly defended by the Allies.

Erected in 1912 by the Association des Amis de Napoléon, this sober stone monument shows deep respect for the men who, despite the unfavourable outcome, fought with courage and determination. It is part of a desire for historical reconciliation, seeking to do justice to all the combatants, whatever their nationality.
